Working Families Party Endorses Jesse Mermell for Congress
Progressive Party Driving a Nationwide Wave of Insurgent Victories Endorses Longtime Progressive Champion
MASSACHUSETTS — Today the Working Families Party announced its endorsement of Jesse Mermell for Congress in District 4. Mermell is a former Brookline Select Board Member, advisor to Governor Deval Patrick, and senior leader at Planned Parenthood with over two decades of experience fighting for progressive values. Recent polling shows Mermell as a frontrunner in her crowded primary.
“This is what putting progressive values into action looks like,” said Maurice Mitchell, national director of the Working Families Party. “Jesse’s leadership in the fight to build a Massachusetts for all, especially her work as a champion for paid family and medical leave, proves she’s a leader who can meet the moment. She speaks authentically about the needs of working families, and proposes bold, transformative solutions. We are proud to have Jesse’s back in 2020 through the Democratic primary, the general election, and beyond.”
Jesse is a longtime progressive leader with a robust record of service for Massachusetts’ working families. She has taken strong progressive stances, including support for Medicare for All, Green New Deal, defunding police and abolishing ICE and comprehensive student debt relief. She’s facing off against six other Democrats for the seat, including the race’s other frontrunner, former Republican Jake Auchincloss, who would be the most conservative member of the Democratic MA delegation.
“The Working Families Party is a driver of transformational change – building a coalition of progressives who are committed to creating opportunity for all and making our economy and our political system more equitable,” said Mermell. “I am honored to join their ranks and look forward to working together to champion bold, progressive change.”
The WFP is a national independent political organization that recruits, trains and elects grassroots progressives to office. Earlier this month, the WFP endorsed progressive challenger Alex Morse for Congress and Sen. Ed Markey’s re-election campaign. The MA endorsements come at the height of a victory streak for the grassroots group, which this year helped elect progressive champions Jamaal Bowman and Mondaire Jones to Congress in New York, ousted five conservative Democratic state senators in New Mexico, helped DC Council Member-elect Jannese Lewis George beat back scaremongering attacks about defunding the police department, helped three progressive district attorneys in Colorado triumph in their primaries and won a slew of elections throughout Pennsylvania.
The WFP will be mobilizing its 16,000 members in the state and lending the support of its national texting team to help elect Jesse Mermell to Congress.
